Artist's Statement
My work is an ongoing investigation of painting in relation to the possibilities of self, sculpture, and my surrounding environment. I work with generative mark making, impulsive color selection, and an engaged-responsive state of flow to create abstractions drawn from visual memory.
This process of working allows me to consider the symbiosis of internal and external landscapes that may be informing the work. The act of painting always brings up a tension between the physical and psychological worlds we inhabit, and that mind-body dualism can bring about both emotive and cerebral states of expression in the work.
In my current body of paintings, the materials and paint are offered a chance to warp, imbed, stiffen or otherwise alter the canvas to determine the form. Surfaces may be worked, tense, or stressed to the maximum while others are relaxed and upon, unfolding gracefully and organically.
Each series of works are tangents of storytelling for the purpose of infinite exploration, but they may tell a new story when viewed in succession or as a whole. I’m interested in the push and pull in their interpretation by the viewer.
